Today we got to spend the afternoon celebrating a friends' retirement. He isn't really that old, but he has worked most of his life and here he is going to start a new journey. We shared many stories with him. His name is Bob and he has brought a lot of laughter into our lives over the years. Bob has the gift of telling a story and he picks the kind that you want to hear over and over.
I remember when Don and I first got married, Bob, a bachelor, would show up with the most hilarious stories, like "Moose Turd Pie". When I first heard it I was outraged! But I couldn't help but laugh because it was so funny. The best things about Bob's visits, were I appreciated my husband so much more. I mean this in the nicest way. I was more convinced that Don was definitely meant for me. I love that when we have friends who bring things and moments into our lives and they help us appreciate everything we already have, because they have added a new dimension to our reality. I laugh more and enjoy life even more because of friends like Bob, they showed me it is okay to have fun and not be so straight and stick-in-the mud.
Bob told the story of the time he and Don were heading to Oregon in my old Toyota Corola to get me. He stretched out his legs and somehow or another found that his foot hit the linkage for the gas peddle and if he pushed on it, it would cause the gas peddle to push against Don's foot and make Don think there was something wrong with the car. He kept doing this off and on for the next half hour or so, exclaiming "Don you are going to get us killed if you don't speed up, some truck is going to run us over" and Don would say exasperated that "He wasn't doing anything, that there was something wrong with the gas peddle" Eventually Don pulled of the road worried that something was really wrong with the car... But Bob finally told him what he had been doing. My husband who has the most forgiving spirit of anyone I know, and who never holds a grudge, was so mad, he refused to talk to Bob the rest of the trip!!!
When Bob recounted this story to us today, I started laughing so hard, I couldn't breathe! It was wonderful. Friends, they just show us how much we need each other. I am so thankful for all our friends out there.
